This is a great one, Robyn! I too am trying to shut out the national
Shit show …. There are local alliances we can and should tune into. One: Kindness Jefferson County seems to be making a difference, I think. People state a need and others respond to it. The way it should be.
I really loved this sentence. "It’ll take every bit of my attention, so I’m saving it up. I’m spending it wisely." And your story of the dog and the horn was such a reminder of why it is so important, even when it is inconvenient, to have dogs and cats in my house, because inevitably they lighten my spirit.
Yes, we've almost always had 2 cats and at least two dogs, but the last cat died at the start of covid, and age and arthritis has meant I just can't handle the kitty litter, so no more cats, and now just one rescue dog, who despite the fact that she thinks I am a sheep who needs to be herded into line (literally rushes at me to get me to stay in my rocking chair at night) and of course my husband is the shepherd who can do no wrong) I love even her herding!
Such an important message here. Understanding the power of our attention and that it is a practice like any other is vital to sustaining our sense of agency, wellbeing and life satisfaction. It’s the greatest gift we can offer ourselves and others.

Thanks, Louisa. Our cats are a pain in the ass, but I don't know how I'd get through the day without them.
