I can totally see where driving would equal freedom when other kinds of movement are so complicated. I am not a huge fan of driving, but this is one drive I very much enjoy. I think because of the scenery and I always leave extra early, so I'm never worried about getting there on time. And I'm driving towards something so enjoyable--watercolor class! Lovely essay on work, watercolor and taking the long way. I particularly enjoyed the description of your drive down US 42 because I live near that stretch of highway in Oldham County. I came to Kentucky 25 years ago with my wife and daughter and only expected to stay until I retired - maybe 10 years. However I have grown to love the beauty of the area, particularly rural Oldham county along 42. My yard backs up on Chestnut Hall Farm (formerly Hillcrest) owned by the CEO of Churchill Downs and is currently used to keep retired race horses..... I walk out into my back yard and this is what I see.....https://ky-sailor.smugmug.com/Chestnut-Hill-Farm-TRF-/Hillcrest-Farm-2005-2020/Hillcrest-Farm. I need to get my photography curated and put up in a organized site, I think I am going to try substack to see if that works for me.
Former governor Happy Chandler said,” I never met a Kentuckian who wasn’t either thinking about going home or actually going home.” It’s a hard place to leave. And if you live right next to a horse farm, I think that might be peak Kentucky.
