The iron cage describes how we mindlessly go through the motions to pursue an end without any real sense of why that end is important or meaningful or even what we actually want to do.

The leader of the chickens, who has been endlessly trying to create a successful escape plan from the horrible farm, tells the other chickens, "You know what the problem is? The fences aren't just round the farm. They're up here, in your heads. There's a better place out there, somewhere beyond that hill..."
